What is NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming)?
In order to understand Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) it is useful to take each word and understand its meaning.
Neuro – This relates to neurology and the way we process information from our five senses through our brain and nervous system.
Linguistic – This relates to how we use language, not just the words but also gestures and postures in order to organise and attribute meaning to our internal representation of the world around us and to be able to communicate internally and externally.
Programming – This comes from computing science. The way our experiences are stored within us. By deleting, upgrading and installing our mental software we can change how we think and therefore how we act.
NLP is about understanding and keeping what works for us and changing the areas that are not working for us. It is about knowing how we create our internal representations – our experiences – of the external world around us and how we can give ourselves choice in our thoughts and actions.
How has NLP been described?
- “Fundamental dynamics between mind (neuro) and language (linguistic) and how their interplay affects our body and behaviour (programming).”
- "a model of interpersonal communication chiefly concerned with the relationship between successful patterns of behaviour and the subjective experiences (esp. patterns of thought) underlying them“
- ... A science, an art, a process, a study, a model, a set of procedures, a system, a technology, a form of applied psychology, a user manual for the brain...
